Art & Architecture Tour

zflorenceaaFirenze/Florence is the heart of the Western Renaissance. Once Europe’s wealthiest city, it abounded in commerce (banking, textile and leather) and its leading families jockeyed for status and power. Members of the Medici, Pazzi and Strozzi families to name a few were single handily responsible for cultivating artists, writers, scientists and other great thinkers of their era. They filled their homes and their city with great art and architecture. Today the core of the vast Medici family collection is housed in the Uffizi Gallery, a museum whose origin was Florence’s city hall and residence for the ruling Medici nobility.

As a trained art historian and Florentine native it will be my pleasure to navigate through the maze of rooms in the Uffizi and bring to life the life and times of the artists represented and their subjects.  You will gain an understanding of the great architectural feat that Vasari undertook in the design and building of the Uffizi and its secret passageway. With our private tour you will not be part of a crowd, struggling for a view and struggling to understand a heavily acented English

We will also compare the older city hall located next door, the Palazzo della Signoria, where a copy of Michelangelo’s great David stands guard at the entrance. We’ll discuss the importance in the cultural life of the city the main town square, Piazza della Signoria and the Loggia dei Lanzi. We will cross the Ponte Vecchio, now filled with some of the world’s most beautiful jewelry stores and follow Vasari’s secret passage across the Arno to another great Medici residence, Palazzo Pitti. We will break for lunch on the “Oltrarno”, Florence’s left bank. Our next stop is a quirky late Medieval church that is uniquely original. We will continue to Florence’s great domed Cathedral, “Il Duomo” which still remains the symbol of Florence and was Michelangelo’s inspiration for the dome of St. Peter’s Cathedral in Rome. Michelangelo’s great David sculpture will be our final stop in this artistic tour de force!
